I love to read. Usually I will switch off between fiction and non fiction books. This keeps me interested as fiction books tend to be easier reads while some non fiction books can be dry and boring.

One problem with reading is that it can be hard to recall the information at a date in the future. You can read all the self help or instructional books in the world, but if you don't remember the priniciples and apply them, what's the point?

So, I figured that I could leverage AI and Anki (Flashcard/Spaced repetition software) to improve my recall of non fiction books. I've just implemented the plan - here is how it goes. I will take the book "Supercommunicators" by Charles Duhigg as an example.

Steps I take to remember what I read

  1. As I am reading, try and highlight passages that are core to the books ideas. Taking notes along them is even better.
  2. Once I finish the book, gather all of my highlights and all of the common highlights from Goodreads
  3. Ask ChatGPT to give me a summary of the book and to create 10 flashcards in Anki format based on the key concepts.
  4. Upload the saved quotes to ChatGPT and ask it to create 10 flashcards based on the key concepts contained within each quote, in Anki format
  5. Import the flashcards to Anki and begin studying them.

Will this work?

I don't know! I just started doing it today with the aforementioned Supercommunicators. Gathering all the information and importing the flashcards took only 15 minutes. Now I just need to study them and make sure to internalize and demonstrate the key concepts and principles.
